Katherine J. Berney, 91, of Bartlett passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at her home in Bartlett.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at the Bartlett United Methodist Church with Pastor Delano Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in the Bartlett Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the funeral on Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Bartlett United Methodist Church. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Katherine Jane was born March 2, 1921, to Thomas Edward and Edith (Prewitt) Wyman on a farm at Loretto, Nebraska. She received her education at Bartlett and graduated in 1938.
On December 13, 1942, Katherine was united in marriage to Clare Berney at Plattsmouth, NE. The couple first resided in Bartlett and later lived in Omaha and Scottsbluff before returning to Bartlett in 1947.
In 1948, Katherine began her career at the Wheeler County Court House as an employee in the Clerk and Treasurer offices. In 1958, she was elected to the office of County Clerk and began her official duties in 1959. In 1978, she was appointed to the position of Clerk Magistrate. She retired as the County Clerk in 1995, and continued as the Clerk Magistrate until retirement on January 1, 2004. The Berney’s also owned and operated the Wheeler County Independent and Burwell Tribune until 1974.
Katherine was a member of the After Five Christian Women’s Club and the Bartlett United Methodist Church where she had served as the Church Treasurer. She enjoyed reading, flowers gardening, and spending time with her family. She was an avid Husker sports fan.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John Sr. and Linda Berney of Bellevue; a daughter, Barbara Hawk of Las Vegas; three grandsons, John Berney Jr. and Jason Berney both of Dallas and Cory Hawk and his wife, Allison Mugler-Hawk of Denver; three great granddaughters, Riley and Elaina Hawk and Amanda Berney; a brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Joyce Wyman of Bellevue and a sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and Ken Martin of Lincoln.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Luella Vidlka and Marjorie Fisher and a brother, George Wyman.
