Dearest Grandma Cook-

Sorry that we will not be able to make it to your service tomorrow. I will be thinking of you as we are on our flight over the pacific. I'll always remember your love of family and all the fun times growing up with visits to you. I'll also remember your cinnamon and cressent rolls on holidays. Sledding on the farm, climbing up to the hay loft, and exploring the old one-room school house. Later, all the games and goofiness in the basement of your Ord house. The fact that you let Brent and I have cold pizza and orange soda for breakfast and didn't tell our mother's about it goes down as one of the greatest Grandma moves ever!

You are loved very much and will be missed and thought of daily. Tell Grandpa hello from us and I wish you peace and rest until we meet again.

What's funny Duane is your math - Valley has a posted a projected 12% decline in the past 10 years, not 20%. Credibility is key, as your posted "facts" certainly uncover that you have little.

For those that know me and know my work, I've never glossed over the fact Ord and Valley County have a tremendous challenge in overcoming population decline. I've been public about this the 2 years I've been in Ord, mentioning it in conversations, public talks and written articles.

Pardon my enthusiasm if I pen an article congratulating the locals on a job well done in creating an environment that has increased our share of young people as a total portion of the population. I'd be willing to bet you didn't even read my article. Herein lies the problem - anytime good news emerges for our community, folks like Duane are quick to dismiss it as misleading or erroneous in nature.

Why is it to celebrate the wins for our community? Why is it we have a collection of minds in this community that continues to tear down the good folks that try to build a positive future? The naysayers have plenty of opportunity to contribute, yet I see little of that on any public service Board or Committee, elected offices or else. If you don't have a solution or fail to show up at public meetings, then what is it you have to offer?

Facts are a funny thing Caleb!
So why is it that according to the census numbers the population in Ord is dropping?
http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/SAFFPopulation?_event=Search&_name=ord&_state=04000US31&_county=ord&_cityTown=ord&_zip=&_sse=on&_lang=en&pctxt=fph
According to the numbers the popluation in Ord has dropped over 20% in the past 10 years. Why is this not mentioned in your population growth article?
Only report the positive not anything negative to give the picture you want.

There seems to be a common theme running through this issue: elected officials who don't care enough to do their jobs. I'm sure the title is nice, but when you decide to become a mayor, a council member, a city official, or a county official, you should do so with the understanding that you're going to have to put some effort into it. It's called responsibility. It's your responsibility to know that when the Nebraska Legislature passes a bill that will impact your city, you're going to need to do some research and get people informed. It's your responsibility to know that when someone needs to know the numbers for a petition, you're going to need to check and re-check the rules. If you don't know, ask. There's no excuse for ignorance.

Mr. Johnson,

I can answer your questions about the older comments.

As this has been an on going story, instead of posting the updated article on its own(as with any on going story) it (the new article) was posted in place of the older article in an effort to retain the earlier comments of those discussing the event.

Thanks for your question,

Andrew Mihm - Editor/Publisher KNLVradio.com
