ORD, Neb. - Students at Ord Elementary school have started a war to help Haitian Orphans, and others are joining arms. The penny war started last week with a couple pickle jars, one for boys, one for girls, and quickly moved to larger 3 gallon buckets after the
first day.
The students, who plan to end their efforts February12th, will hold a presentation on February 15th for the Valley House of Hope in the elementary school gym at 2:45 where the students will present a check to begin construction of a Valley County sponsored orphanage.
"I'm amazed at their compassion that they have for the children in Haiti," said Ord Elementary 6th Grade Teacher Erin Craven who added that the students just keep coming with pennies.
After the Elementary students learn their grand total a challenge will be issued to their High School counterparts. Their penny war will begin on February 22nd.
Valley County Health System is also planning a penny war.
The orphanage was a dream of Tom Thompson's, a member of a group of Ordites volunteering in Haiti just before the devastating earthquake. Word of the orphanage began circulating around town and Thompson's dream is quickly becoming reality.
