LINCON, Neb. - Many people in and around Ord probably know and remember Gail Klimek for many reasons. The son of Dan and Nadine Klimek, Gail grew up living at 418 South 15th Street. His Mom and Dad still live at that address.
You may remember Gail helping you when he worked at Gottlieb Well Drilling or Greene Construction; or mowing your lawn. Now, as he prepares for the Nation's Triathlon, the 48 year old Alpha School teacher needs your help to honor a little girl named Kaitlyn.
Kaitlyn Bennett and Gail met through an organization called "Team in Training," a
comprehensive endurance training program for runners, walkers, cyclists, and triathletes. The program benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Participants in the Team in Training program receive training and support for endurance events around the country while raising funds for LLS. LLS is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and to improving the quality of life of the patients and families affected by these diseases.
Kaitlyn, said Gail, has touched his heart. "Kaitlyn recently told her mother that she is not scared anymore of things like she used to be. She said that her cancer has made her brave and made her not be scared of the little things, except thunderstorms. This really touched and inspired me. For a little girl to have been through so much already that she has developed such bravery and wisdom. We as adults spend a lot of time worrying about all the little things. If only we could all slow down, put life in perspective, not become so stressed out, and be brave. If only we could all be more like Kaitlyn."
Gail has made it his goal to raise $5,000 for LLS has he trains for the Nation's Triathlon, an Olympic distance triathlon which will take place in Washington D.C. on September 13. The Triathlon consists of a 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike and 10 kilometer run. As Gail endures the grueling event, he will be wearing a ribbon for not only Kaitlyn, but also for each person whose name is submitted to him by donors. The ribbons will honor those currently struggling with cancer, those who have survived cancer, and those who lost their battle with cancer.
Gail is asking for your support. Please click on the link below to find out how you can help Gail, not only honor Kaitlyn, but all those in our lives affected by cancer. Although the donation letter asks that donations be made by July 10th, donations will be accepted up until the day of the race, according to Gail.
