Voters pass $9.8M bond to renovate and expand Ord's High School.ORD, Neb. - Ord High School students will be getting a new high school courtesy of the voters.

"Oh, we're just thrilled to death for our kids," said Ord Superintendent Max Kroger. "We're just, uh, I can't express how much I appreciate all the support of the community and especially all the people who worked so hard on this. I've never been around a group of people that worked so hard to get something done and, and united to  get something positive done for our community."

Voter turnout was 74.91%.

Two groups dug trenches on opposite sides of the issue. The proponents Our Kids First and the opponents C.A.R.E. #5 held town hall meetings prior to the mail election.

The $9.8 million bond issued passed by 160 votes or 54.05%.

Superintendent Kroger said he hopes construction will begin next summer.

"Well, hopefully next summer. It will probably take 'til May to get everything prepared and ready go. But hopefully by the end of May."

I see by the report that only one vote was not counted among the ballots. I wonder if you can get a report from the Clerk telling how many ballots received were not counted because of errors? Thanks.

It's too bad that farmers and ranchers are the ones that have to carry the burden for projects such as these. They are already hurting because of cattle and crop prices where they are and this will set them back even that much more. It's too bad that people don't realize that producers can only take SO many taxes, and once they can't take it any more, they won't be around to produce the food that goes on our table.

Interesting comment. It's the same argument that has been used to oppose all kinds of things for decades now. It is important to note that, even with lots of farmers going bankrupt and quitting business, not one single acre of crop land has been taken out of production as a result. Hummmmmm?

Actually 2 acres of cropland are lost per minute in the US every day due to urban development and growth.

Some of the largest land owners in the area supported this project. They understand the need for this project and are willing to pay their share.

It is my opinion and my opinion only that if the land owners can't pay the higher taxes then they need to sell the land to somebody that can operate more efficiently as they would be weeded out someday anyway. Thank goodness the majority is open to progress!

Let's talk about the last couple of decades! Not one acre taken out of production but how many small family farms lost to corporations? How many vacant farmsteads falling into ruin or bulldozed down? How many small towns whose main streets are shabby and lifeless because as the people were "weeded out" as it is so eloquently put in another entry here, so was the business required to keep their doors open. Wow

If you think this is the straw that is going to "break the camel's back" I have news for you, it has been fractured for a long time. As for all the small farms drying up that has been going on for longer than two decades, and it is sad to see but, if you do not have a modern infrastructure it's is very difficult to keep a community going as people will move elseware to find it. Part of economic evolution to get big or get out with bulldozers and big farm corporations being part of it.

Answer me this: Exactly how many "big corporation" farms operate within THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT? How many acres have been lost in THIS school district to "urban developement?" The arguments you are making are so broad in scope that they include the whole country, but what you fail to mention is whether this is actually happening HERE!

Thumbs up to all of the people who worked so hard to make this school bond happen. I hope they know how much the majority of the voters appreciate all of their hard work. Thanks, to all the parents, grandparents, faculity, business owners & tax payers for your support!

Knowing that the Ord community is willing to support such an investment in the future of the community through education of young people - who become tax paying citizens - our family (young professional couple with children) would move to Ord in a heartbeat! You have a wonderful community!

I am unfazed by whether the bond issue past or not. What did bother me though, I talked to a senior parent about the bond issue, there statement was they don"t deserve the bond, there reason was that their senior child at Ord does not know how to read yet. This school can surely do better.

cornstock, that senior parent needs to take the blame on that one..where was that parent at during all those years?

Seriously? Still can't read? Gotta agree, the school can't force someone to learn and do their work, but a PARENT can!
