"It was a faulty electrical cord." - Don Fast, Nebraska State Fire Marshall

ORD, Neb - A fire late Saturday afternoon quickly engulfed the J and S Diesel Shop in Ord. 

Eyewitnesses said the fire appeared to spread quickly. 

First reports of smoke came from the public sometime between 5:30 and 5:45 pm Saturday afternoon.  

Several passersby reported hearing explosions or "popping" sounds as the fire started.  Shortly thereafter the smoke began billowing out of the building and then flames broke through and minutes later the flames were shooting 50 to 60 feet into the air. 

The fire appeared to be fed by oil with thick black smoke coming from the building.

Fire Departments from North Loup, Burwell and Scotia assisted the Ord Fire Department in fighting the fire. 

Highway 11 East of Ord was shut down from just past Trotters Whoa n Go and Alco to North of St. John's Lutheran Church. 

"The cause was a faulty electrical cord," said State Fire Marshall Don Fast in an interview Monday morning. 

According to Fast the building was a total loss.
