ORD, Neb. - The Valley County Supervisors are expressing concern about the lack of communication between the city of Ord and the county on law enforcement issues and emergency communications.
Last Friday the city of Ord voted to end the contract with Valley County for communication services. The city council said they wanted to get out of the contract immediately and
turn over their emergency communications to Region 26 in Taylor.
But Jack Van Slyke of Arcadia who represents Valley County on the Region 26 board said "We have a contract", noting that the contract contained a cancellation notification provision. Van Slyke also responded to a question from supervisor Pat Waldmann about the $2,400 the city said it would cost for Region 26 to handle their calls by saying, "That's misinformation."
Bob Sevenker said that it would be premature for the county to act on the city's request without meeting first with city officials. Sevenker also noted that there were several other issues related to law enforcement between the Ord and Valley County that need discussion between the two government bodies.
The county's relationship with Region 26 was also discussed. Several of the supervisors and County Attorney, Glenn Clark all expressing their thoughts that Valley County's $54,000 charge by Region 26 was out-of-line with the amount of calls that come in to the Taylor office from Valley County. Jack Van Slyke noted that Garfield county pays considerably less and generates more than twice the number of calls into the Region 26 office.
