The Happy Jack Chalk Mine Association will receive reimbursement of $400 to fund planting hardy water-wise perennial plants in a butterfly garden adjacent to the picnic area on the Happy Jack grounds near Scotia.

This funding will be awarded through the Keep America Beautiful Affiliate, Keep Loup Basin Beautiful, and was provided through a UPS Community Improvement grant. This grant was awarded to Keep Loup Basin Beautiful to promote the September 8, 2012, Keep America Beautiful National Planting Day, “Get Growing” project.

The plantings will benefit the Happy Jack Mines for years to come by using plants that do not require excessive water or chemicals. The plants will be chosen from a list that will attract butterflies and restore ecological balance to the environment while creating a greener, more beautiful site.

You can do your part! This fall, plan to plant native water wise species at your home, or join the volunteer effort to help beautify Happy Jack.

If you would like more information about this project, contact Betty Carlson at 308-219-0382. Visit the Keep Loup Basin Beautiful web site at www.keeploupbasinbeautiful.org or call 308-346-3393 for information that organization. Keep Loup Basin beautiful is sponsored by the Loup Basin RC&D organization.
