Today will be unsettled across the Central Plains. During the first half of the day, scattered showers and thunderstorms will drift east across much of Nebraska into eastern Kansas. A few severe storms are possible. Highs today will be a notch warmer than Monday, and reach into the middle 80s in south central Nebraska, and around 90 or in the lower 90s over north central Kansas. Tonight, more redevelopment of thunderstorms is anticipated and those storms could also be severe.

Vortex 2, “by far the largest and most ambitious effort ever made to understand tornadoes” according to the project’s website www.vortex2.org, was staged nearby in Kearney as severe weather is anticipated for a large area including central and north central Nebraska east and north into Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service in Grand Island is forecasting possible severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening following a dry period late Tuesday morning and early afternoon. Forecaster’s believe the best chance for severe weather will be along and northeast of a line from Loup City to Hastings to Hebron, including nearly all of the KNLV coverage area.

Temperatures are expected to be warm ahead of the approaching cold front with many areas seeing temperatures in the mid 80s and low 90s.

Vortex 2 is heading east where there is a heightened risk for severe weather.
