Over 500 people came out inspite of the threat of rain on Saturday, June 16, 2012 for Ord’s own Katie Felton. A tearful reunion flooded with a lot of hugs cheered Katie on as her entire family and community welcomed her to the #TeamKatie Free Will Walk and BBQ Benefit at Auble’s Pond in Ord. Since October of 2011, Katie has been battling what began as pneumonia and soon developed into acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is a life-threatening illness (causing death in 1/3 of those who contract it) that can leave survivors with memory loss and other quality-of-life problems.
During her recovery, Katie began showing signs of critical illness polyneuropathy. This neurological disorder has left Katie unable to walk. Though neurologists are optimistic that Katie will walk again, they are not certain of what the future holds.
The benefit kicked off with Katie and her family starting the walk, as Katie was in her wheel chair, being pushed around Auble pond. The crowds followed in mass. The silent auction and selling of raffle tickets, face painting, music and a BBQ followed.
