Error causes Burwell recall attempt to start over

Posted by KNLV News On July - 21 - 2010

BURWELL — A Burwell man trying to recall three elected officials is starting the process again. There was an error in the number of signatures Donald M. Jones was told he needed to collect, said Linda Heermann, Garfield County election commissioner.

Jones is trying to recall Burwell Mayor Charles Cone, Ward 1 Council Member Terry Cone and Ward 2 Council Member Carolyn DeBaets.

Heermann said Jones turned in the petitions but did not have enough signatures, possibly due to an error in the number he was told was required.

  1. oh really says:

Could Mr. Jones find something better to do with his time? The previous mayor and city council members could have taken care of this matter in a timely manner instead of passing the buck on this issue and other issues that they were to CHICKEN to act on. Talk about passing the buck!!!!! Mr. Jones and his cohorts need to find something more productive to do.

SHAME on DON JONES for wasting time of City and County employees and wasting precious money of the City and County on this STUPID petition! SHAME on the people who are helping him with this nonsense! And SHAME on the people who signed the petition to recall any of these council people! What does this guy do anyway besides sit at the bar & public library all day???? Does he even have a job??? “Oh Really” is right…DON JONES and his TROUBLEMAKING cohorts need to find something good to do for the community!!! If they can’t do that, maybe they need to move out of Burwell…to the middle of the Sahara maybe!!!

Why are these comments posted to this story, dated July 21, 2010, and the comments were made back on July 7th and 9th? Are you people related to the county clerk of Garfield County, who seems to have a problem with math? I don’t really care which side of the issue you are on, the thing that really is the problem in this issue is a county official that lied or is really not interpreting the law correctly. When we can’t trust an elected, bonded, county official, we may as well bring home all the troops, burn the flag, rip up the Constitution and six gun our way through our disputes.

      Mr. Johnson,

I can answer your questions about the older comments.

As this has been an on going story, instead of posting the updated article on its own(as with any on going story) it (the new article) was posted in place of the older article in an effort to retain the earlier comments of those discussing the event.

      Thanks for your question,

  5. Burwell #1 says:

Don Jones is a lazy no good trouble maker who pays no taxes and lives in a camper. He has no buisness passing around a petition he does not work walks his dog while driving down the middle of our streets,(or he use to). Most of the people stirring the pot are from out of town O they may have had relation here that brought them but most should just go away and let Burwell enjoy the Rodeo that none of these idiots seem to care about. Let it go ALREADY the mayor and council are doing a fine job it was the old mayor and council that screwed it up in the first place.

  6. Concerned Burwellian says:

There seems to be a common theme running through this issue: elected officials who don’t care enough to do their jobs. I’m sure the title is nice, but when you decide to become a mayor, a council member, a city official, or a county official, you should do so with the understanding that you’re going to have to put some effort into it. It’s called responsibility. It’s your responsibility to know that when the Nebraska Legislature passes a bill that will impact your city, you’re going to need to do some research and get people informed. It’s your responsibility to know that when someone needs to know the numbers for a petition, you’re going to need to check and re-check the rules. If you don’t know, ask. There’s no excuse for ignorance.

GEESH, GIVE THE GUY HIS FREEDOM. YOU USE YOURS, LET HIM USE HIS. I USE MINE AND LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!
    SWEET FREEDOM!
