Katherine Eleonora Olson, 97, of Ord, Nebraska died September 26, 2010 at the Valley View Living Center in Ord, Nebraska.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday October 1, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Burwell, Nebraska. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell. Rev. Bill Stovall will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 -7 p.m. at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church.
Katherine Eleonora , fifth of six children was born to Alfred and Augusta (Nilson) Anderson at their farm home near West Point, Nebraska on September 26, 1913.
She was baptized and confirmed in the West Side Methodist Church near Oakland. She attended rural school in Cuming County and graduated from West Point High School in 1930. Then, for three years, she taught in Cuming County schools.
In June, 1932, Katherine met Harold Olson, the love of her life, at an Epworth League Convention hosted by a church near Genoa. On June 7, 1935, they were united in marriage at the Anderson family home. To this union four children were born, one son and three daughters.
During the first four years of marriage they lived on the Olson family farm near Newman Grove, Nebraska. Here their first child, Cherie, was born in 1937. These were years of struggling against hail, drouth, and grasshoppers, so they moved to Wheeler County in1939. There they became established as a Sandhill ranch family and a part of the Beaver Valley community. Katherine was active in the Bartlett Methodist Church and the Beaver Valley Women’s Club. While living here, son Kenton and daughters Marlene and Roma were born. In 1951 the family moved into Bartlett so the children could get to school more easily in the winter. The next move was made in the spring of 1955, back to the ranch, but this time to the old stone house on Headquarters.
In 1962 the family moved to Burwell and Katherine remained here after Harold’s death in 1972. Katherine was active in the Burwell United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and was a member of the D.Y.S. Extension Club. For many years she enjoyed reading the newspaper each week to a group at the nursing home. Beginning in 1991, Katherine was cared for by her daughter, Marlene, and in 1998 the two moved to Ord.
Katherine loved to read and she loved to sing. In her later years she returned to playing the piano. Despite her problems she continued all of these activities almost until the end of her life. Katherine appreciated her many friends, neighbors and relatives and others along life’s way who made life rich and interesting.
