Governor Heineman To Declare November 15, 2012 as America Recycles Day in Nebraska

Governor Heineman will be issuing a Governor’s Proclamation declaring November 15th as America Recycles Day in Nebraska. Keep Loup Basin Beautiful encourages all the communities in this central Nebraska area to issue a similar Proclamation to promote recycling in your community.

Each year, the United States generates more than 240 million tons of municipal solid waste— that’s more than 4 pounds per person per day. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, our nation has reached an overall recycling rate of 34.1 percent. Right now, our current national recycling rate:

• Saves the energy equivalent of 229 million barrels of oil

• Saves Americans approximately $25.5 billion in avoided costs for barrels of crude oil

• Avoids greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing more than 36 million cars from the road each year.

But much more can be done, and America Recycles Day 2012 is one way citizens can help raise awareness by focusing the nation’s attention on the importance of reducing waste by reusing, recycling, and buying recycled-content products. You can help by learning more about the recycling options in your community and by committing to recycling more materials in the coming year. Visit the American Recycles Day web site at http://americarecyclesday.org for more information, to take a pledge, or see a sample Proclamation. The Keep Loup Basin Beautiful web site at www.keeploupbasinbeautiful.org also has information about America recycles Day.

Keep Loup Basin Beautiful is a project of the Loup Basin RC&D organization.
