Henry ''Hank'' Benda, 90



Henry F. “Hank” Benda, 90, of Lincoln formerly of Ord passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at the Waterford College View in Lincoln.

Mr. Benda’s wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 24, 2012, at the Ord Memorial Chapel with Reverend Jeff Wulf officiating. Masonic Rites will be conducted by the Ord Masonic Lodge #103 A.F. and A.M. Private Inurnment and Military Honors by Ord VFW Post #7029 and American Legion Post #38 will be held prior to the services at the Ord City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Ord Public School Foundation or the Ord Volunteer Fire Department. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Hank was born July 15, 1922, to Frank and Cecilia (Absalon) Benda at Ord, Nebraska. He was raised in Ord and graduated from Ord High School in 1940. Following graduation Hank continued his education in California.

On July 24, 1942, Hank was united in marriage to Patricia “Pat” Rettenmayer at Mankato, KS. From 1942-1945 Hank served in the United States Navy. After his discharge from the Navy, Hank and Pat settled in Ord. The couple owned and operated Benda’s Clothiers and Cleaners for 39 years. After retirement they continued to make their home in Ord and at Grandview Assisted and Independent Living Center. Mrs. Benda passed away on August 10, 2010. In February of 2011, Hank moved to Lincoln to be close to his daughter and her family.

Hank was a member of the VFW Post #7029, American Legion Post #38, and Ord Masonic Lodge #103 A.F. and A.M and had served as the Master. He was very involved in community and served on various boards including the Ord School Board, Ord Chamber of Commerce and Valley County Board of Supervisors. Hank also served on the Ord Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and bowling and was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker Fan. During the winters Hank and Pat enjoyed camping in southern Texas.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janee and Larry Dlugosh of Lincoln; a son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Barb Benda of Ord; four grandchildren, Heidi (Dan) Stoick of Watertown, SD, Jadi (Dan) Miller of Lincoln, Scott Benda of Ord and Jason Dlugosh of Lincoln; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pat; and one brother, Frank Benda Jr.
