Margaret B. Nelson, 88, of Ord passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012 at the Valley View Living Center in Ord.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 20, 2012, at the Ord First United Methodist Church with Reverend Jeff Wulf officiating. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to Grand Island Humane Society or the Ord United Methodist Church. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret was born Sept. 5, 1923, At Greeley, Nebraska to E.J. “Pete” and Marie Agnes (McGuire) Barnes. She was the oldest of nine children. Her parents farmed and lived in various towns. Margaret graduated from Ord High School in 1940.

On August 7, 1942, Margaret was united in marriage to Jay Nelson at Marysville, Kansas. Jay served in WWII and returned to Ord in 1946. The couple made their home in Ord where they raised their family.

Margaret was a mom and a homemaker. She also helped her friend, Mildred Farmer with the hotel next door, taking in ironing and sewing. Margaret worked for the Valley County Hospital in the Laundry Department for 27 years.

Jay passed away July 29, 1998. Margaret continued to live in her home until November of 2009. She resided at Grandview and Parkview Village. She has made her home at Valley View Living Center since September of 2010.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, reading, and her dog, Molly. Margaret will be remembered for her chocolate chip cookies and the moss roses in her yard on “L” Street. She especially enjoyed spending time and mothering her siblings and her family.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Diana Nelson of Ord; two daughters and sons-in-law Pat and Bill Murphy of Roosevelt, AZ, and Nola and Richard Miles of Ord; six grandchildren Tim and Jessica Miles of Grand Island, Chris Miles of Lincoln, Chris Anne Shubert of Grand Island, Tonda and Jeff Nelson of Grand Island, Sandy and Todd Pelton of Ord and Eric and Tammi Knutson of Ord; nine great-grandchildren with twins expected; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Derrell Barnes of Elm Creek, Earl Barnes of Lincoln; Larry and Lorraine ­­ Barnes of Grand Island, and Robert and Carol Barnes of Springfield; and three sisters-in-laws, Luetta Barnes of Grand Island, Mary Barnes of Central City and Adeline Nelson of Ericson

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Helen Giesenhagen and Patricia Barnes; two brothers, Gerald and Donald Barnes.
