Fifteen Jr/Sr Ord High School students and nine mentors from the Ord-Arcadia TeamMates Chapter attended two college visits in Hastings at Central Community College and Hastings College on February 20th. The group had invigorating and informative sessions on both campuses. During the college visits the youth spoke with college students and admissions counselors, took walking tours of the campuses, and learned about scholarship and activity opportunities. At Central Community College the TeamMates youth also learned about numerous existing and new career opportunities. Hastings College treated the group to lunch at the Student Union where everyone enjoyed an unending smorgasbord of food!
“The college visits proved to be a valuable experience for our students to learn about college opportunities and to focus on their aspirations for the future. The main message emphasized throughout the day was the importance of working hard in high school to plan for achieving your dreams in college and life. This experience also gave mentees the chance to establish a deeper rapport with their mentors and express their interests, hopes and dreams for the future! The college visit experience fits perfectly with the TeamMates Mission: To positively impact the world by inspiring youth to reach their full potential through mentoring,” commented TeamMates coordinators Dahn Hagge and Rachel Lueck.
Tom and Nancy Osborne founded the TeamMates Mentoring Program in 1991 in an effort to provide support and encouragement to school aged youth. The goal of the program is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education. To reach this goal, youth meet one hour per week with a caring adult who serves as a mentor. Mentors are volunteers from the community who have dedicated themselves to making a difference in the life of a young person. Mentors give youth a sense of hope, purpose, and vision.
Currently the Ord-Arcadia TeamMates Chapter needs six new mentors. If you are interested in becoming part of the Ord-Arcadia TeamMates program, please contact the local TeamMates Coordinators, Dahn Hagge at 308-730-2294 or Rachel Lueck at 308-789-6271.
