Lela B. Cook, 90 of Ord died Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at her home at Grandview Assisted and Independent Living Center in Ord.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. at the Ord First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jeff Wulf officiating. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Ord First United Methodist Church or Grandview Assisted and Independent Living Center. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Lela Blanche was born November 2, 1919, on the family farm in the Davis Creek area of Valley County to Louis and Minnie (Albers) Axthelm. She received her education at the Davis Creek Country School and graduated from Ord High School in 1937.

Lela was united in marriage to Howard W. Cook on November 22, 1938 at North Loup. The couple farmed together in Valley County until 1978, when they retired and moved into Ord. Mr. Cook passed away on April 10, 1983. Lela spent her entire life in Valley County and has made her home at Grandview Assisted and Independent Living Center since April of 2005.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a 4-H leader and belonged to an Extension Club and the Senoir Classics. She enjoyed making quilts, embroidering, and baking bread and cinnamon rolls. She was passionate about music, and her children’s musical talents.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Beverly Cook of Lincoln; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Vondell and Richard Meyer of Scotia, Shirley Baum of Lincoln and Nancy and Dick Freeling of Hastings; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild; one sister and brother-in-law, Opal and John Hamer of Hastings, a brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Erma Axthelm of Washington and two sisters-in-law, Betty Jo Axthem of Ord and Virginia Cook of Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; an infant son, Nordean Cook; a son-in-law, Ernie Baum; a granddaughter-in-law, Cynthia Meyer; three brothers, Lloyd, Donald and Dale Axthelm and a sister, Leona Negley.

    Dearest Grandma Cook-

    Sorry that we will not be able to make it to your service tomorrow. I will be thinking of you as we are on our flight over the pacific. I’ll always remember your love of family and all the fun times growing up with visits to you. I’ll also remember your cinnamon and cressent rolls on holidays. Sledding on the farm, climbing up to the hay loft, and exploring the old one-room school house. Later, all the games and goofiness in the basement of your Ord house. The fact that you let Brent and I have cold pizza and orange soda for breakfast and didn’t tell our mother’s about it goes down as one of the greatest Grandma moves ever!

    You are loved very much and will be missed and thought of daily. Tell Grandpa hello from us and I wish you peace and rest until we meet again.
