Loraine Elzola (Lindsay) Otto, 89 of Burwell, Nebraska passed away February 17, 2012 at the Community Memorial Health Center after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell. Pastor Dennis Davenport will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 p.m. Monday at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Loraine was born August 24, 1922 in Custer County, Nebraska to Lee and Anna (Herrick) Lindsay. Loraine was raised on farms in Custer, Loup and Garfield counties in Nebraska.
On December 9, 1942 Loraine married Leonard Roy Otto in St. Paul, Nebraska. To this union four children were born. After working at the Hastings Ammunition Plant during World War II, the couple returned to the North Loup and Burwell areas where they farmed for the next fifteen years. In the late 1950’s, Loraine and Leonard ran Otto’s Grocery in Burwell.
In 1960 Loraine began her career as a nurse aid. She worked at the Burwell Hospital and Nursing Home and St. Francis Hospital for a combined thirty two years. She then did home health care for five more years.
In retirement Loraine enjoyed gardening and working with her flowers. She loved her time with her children and grandchildren at the family cabin on the North Loup River. Loraine also liked embroidering and made numerous beautiful quilts. She baked pies for the Senior Citizens Center and volunteered on Fridays at the Center. Loraine was a long time member of the Burwell United Methodist Church.
Loraine is survived by two sons, Donald and wife Sylvia Otto of Edmund, Oklahoma and David Otto of Burwell, Nebraska. Two daughters, Doris and husband Steve Morris of Burwell, Nebraska and Sharon and Roger Frink of Lincoln, Nebraska. A brother, Roye Lindsay of Burwell, Nebraska. Four grandchildren, Paige, Allison, Walker and Wade and five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Kasey, Olivia, Grant and Beckett.
Loraine was preceded in death by her husband in 1989, her parents, and a brother, Dale.
