LINCOLN — A proposal by the Nebraska School Activities Association would place the initial decision on whether to let transgender students in high school sports in the hands of parents and local school districts.
The policy indicates that a student and his or her parents would have to notify the school if the student identifies with a gender different than what’s listed on a birth certificate.
From there, the school can decide whether to pursue a waiver from the NSAA. Those requests will be evaluated by the newly-formed Gender Identity Elligibilty committee. They would look at evidence of hormone therapy or operations and statements that demonstrate consistency in gender identity.
There would be an appeal process that would be heard by an association committee.
A final vote on the policy is set for January.
