NIOBRARA — The man wanted in a manhunt near Niobrara shot himself rather than surrendering to police.
David Hoffman, 25, took a sheriff deputy’s gun and escaped earlier this week.
A spokesman for the FBI says the man was found on the Santee Reservation and taken to a local hospital. He died there. No officers were injured.
Hoffman was arrested on Tuesday on burglary and theft charges.
The manhunt put schools and other parts of the Niobrara community on lockdown.
