LINCOLN — In a 6-2 vote, the Board of Directors at the NSAA adopted a policy for gender participation in sports.
The new rule requires a student to show that he or she has undergone hormone therapy or gender reassignment surgery before being allowed to participate in a sport that’s inconsistent with a student’s gender at birth.
It would also create a committee that would include a physician experienced with transgender health care, to rule on eligibility, and a medical professional, to verify the “consistent gender identification and expression”.
From here, the decision moves to the NSAA’s General Assembly. That meets in August and could vote to override the board’s decision.
