ORD — With food allergies becoming more and more prevalent, the Ord School District plans on looking at ways to better protect children.
One area in particular is homemade goods coming into the school. Often times for birthdays or around a holiday, students will bring in food from home to share. However, the concern for the school is not necessarily knowing what is in the food and whether it is safe for each student.
“Are we putting any of our students at a risk of being exposed to food allergies if there are homemade goods being served in our classroom and we don’t know what’s in them?” asks Elementary Principal Doug Smith. “Even if [students] just come into contact with it, not necessarily eating it.”
A decision on whether to change what can be brought into the school has not been made, yet, but the district plans to continue looking for an option that keeps students safe and makes sense for the district.
