LINCOLN — A bill has hit the Nebraska Legislature that would prevent the state from cutting funds to an agency or limiting its contracts if that agency cites a religious objection.
This would protect certain welfare agencies that refuse service to same-sex couples.
Last year, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services abandoned a policy barring same-sex couples from becoming foster parents and supporters say some faith-based groups have been forced to close after refusing to provide welfare to gay parents.
About 5,600 Nebraska kids are under state care.
