BURWELL — A measure in the Nebraska Unicameral is getting push back from the Loup Basin RC&D Council.
The bill would eliminate scrap tire grants for recycling program, similar to the one the RC&D has held in recent years.
Janet Sanders of the council has notified the legislature with her concerns of ending the program. “Each year our organization brings the scrap tire cleanups to a different rural community in our region therefore providing a service for households, farms and ranches to live in a cleaner and healthier environment.”
Cleaning up the tires takes away a breeding ground for mosquitoes that could spread disease in summer months.
Last year, the RC&D collected almost 230 tons of tires. They’re hoping to have another this year, but if this bill passes, that would be the last. The measure would take effect January 1st, 2017.
