ORD — Farmers and ranchers got a lesson in farm succession and estate planning this week in Ord.
Participants learned about tax credits, loan programs and how to talk to loved ones about the future of an estate. Those conversations can be awkward for families.
“It’s a little hard to bring up, ” says presenter Dave Goeller. “Probably something even truer than hard to bring up is it’s really easy to put off for another day.”
“So, part of what we try to do is encourage them to, if this is something important, get to it and get something accomplished,” he adds.
Goeller is a Transition Specialist with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He and his group say this time of year is the right time to begin thinking about farm succession because it is before things get busy for producers in the spring.
