LINCOLN — A bill in the Nebraska Legislature that would lower the age to hold certain public offices lowered to 18 has won first-round approval.
This would apply to those running for governor, lieutenant governor, the legislature and the supreme court.
Nebraska requires those running for senator to be at least 21 and those for governor, lieutenant governor and the supreme court at least 30.
Supporters say anyone who can legally vote should be able to serve, while opponents worry that 18-year-old brains are not yet fuller developed.
