BURWELL — Two Burwell students put pen to paper this week on letters of intent to play football at the next level.
Ty Chaffin went with Nebraska-Lincoln, while Lane Helgoth is off to Chadron State.
For Chaffin, Dakota Wesleyan offered a scholarship and UNK wanted him to walk-on, but, when the Huskers came calling, he jumped. “When that time came around I asked them what they were thinking and they said “we’d like you to walk-on here’,” he explains.
“Then, it was a no-brainer,” Chaffin adds. “My heart was there so that’s where I was going to go.” The receiver reigned in 14 touchdowns this past season and averaged over 18 years-per-catch.
While Chaffin did it through the air, Helgoth contributed on the ground. The back tallied nearly 500 yards rushing and six touchdowns. Not to mention, he was a pretty solid blocker on the line. For Lane, it came down to what Chadron was offering.
“I had offers to go to Doane or Nebraska Wesleyan, [but] I just thought Chadron was more of my fit,” Helgoth explains. “They have a really good agricultural program and I thought, you know what, that’s probably where I’ll go.”
Both guys helped lead the Longhorns to am appearance in the D-1 State Championship this past November. Now, each is focus on the rest of their senior years and sports seasons before heading to campus in the fall.
