ORD — A week of clearing and widening hit county highway crews across central Nebraska after last week’s blizzard.
Valley and Garfield County each had nearly a foot of snowfall, but strong winds caused drifts up to six feet in some areas.
“We haven’t had a snowstorm like this for such a longtime so it’s kind of overwhelming,” says Valley County Highway Superintendent Jay Meyer. “We accumulated over 220 hours of just straight-overtime from basically Tuesday through Saturday.”
That was true fro Garfield County, too, where Superintendent Gary Kinney says crews also put in days over 12 hours.
Both counties also thanked volunteers who helped clear areas, however they could.
The goal for both was to have roads passable in at least one direction as soon as possible. Each had the area about 99% clear by Wednesday night.
