LEXINGTON — A mosque in Lexington is being sued by the city for what it says has been a violation of zoning ordinances.
The Islamic Center wants to renovate the property it occupies and an adjacent building. However, the city says a certificate of occupancy hasn’t been obtained and a conditional use permit is required before the property can be used as a church.
The ACLU of Nebraska told the city it violated the religious rights of Muslim residents after a December vote that denied a permit to expand the mosque.
The group also claims the permit denial violates a federal law.
