HASTINGS — A one year jail sentence has been handed down to a former Hastings teacher accused of having sex with a student.
Jonathan Shafer, 39, had pleaded no contest and was convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and negligent child abuse.
He was originally charged with sexual assault for an alleged relationship with a then 15-year-old girl. Nebraska law prohibits those 19 and older from having sexual contact with people younger than 16.
The sexual assault charge was dropped after the girl told police she had been mistaken on the time frame and was 16 when the relationship began in the summer of 2013.
