LINCOLN — A bill is being debated in the Nebraska Legislature that would lessen the restrictions for farm equipment on county roads.
Supporters say the law hasn’t kept up with the size of modern equipment. Still, opponents worry about the possibility of additional damage to roads.
The Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation and Nebraska Cattlemen Association have both lobbied for the measure and 43rd District Senator Al Davis wants to hold them to that if road problems do arise.
“I said It’s going to be up to you to police this,” he says. “I want a letter from you that says ‘Okay, if there are problems, we’re not going to object to going back to a system where these restrictions are put in place again.”
“It’s a little bit of a self-policing piece,” Davis adds.
The bill has advanced out of committee and is set for debate in the legislature. The current restrictions would remain in place for bridges.
