LINCOLN — After nearly two days of filibuster, a second property tax bill has won second-round approval in the legislature.
This one is aimed at farm and ranch owners and would provide an additional $20 million in tax credits to offset local property tax burden on ag land.
The legislature has already given second-round approval to another bill in the package that is championed by Governor Ricketts. The proposal is by Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids and could make it more difficult for school boards not to lower levy rates. It would also tighten restrictions on bonding for certain environmental projects.
Both proposals need one more vote before heading to the governor’s desk. This legislative session ends on April 20th.
