LINCOLN — A bill has won final approval in the legislature that would grant young immigrants who entered the country illegally, but have been granted lawful status the ability to earn a professional or commercial license.
Supports of the measure say these people should have access to these licenses so they can work in professions such as teaching and nursing and not wind up on the street.
These individuals were granted lawful status under the federal deferred-actions policy.
The measure passed 33-11, but is opposed by Governor Ricketts. He says the bill is too broad and unfair to immigrants who followed the legal process to establish residency.
