BURWELL — As spring gets rolling, folks in central Nebraska are preparing their gardens.
The Loup River Scenic By-Way helped by offering two classes this week that focused on creating a unique garden with flowers that attract butterflies.
Amy Hughes taught the class and says it’s important for the longevity of the insect. “People are excited and they’re very receptive to the conservation side,” she explains..
“They’re wanting to be involved in helping preserve those butterfly species and help out,” Hughes adds. “Especially the monarchs, when you start talking about them and the fact that they’re close to being put on the endangered species list.”
Plus, it’s not just butterflies. Bees and other insects benefit from the gardens, as well.
Certified butterfly gardens already cover the by-way area. Nearly 20 are sprinkled around the region.
