HASTINGS — A Hastings woman accused of stuffing a baby wipe down a toddler’s throat is facing up to five years in prison.
Azudany Serrano-Contreras was sentenced for three to five years after pleading no contest to negligent child abuse resulting in injury.
She is the aunt of the toddler’s mother.
Investigators say the 34-year-old told officers that she was babysitting the child in March of 2015 when she cleaned the girls face and set the wipe on the counter to get lotion. When she turned around, the child was choking.
The 19-month-old died two days later.
Authorities say the child couldn’t have put the wipe down her throat on her own.
