BURWELL — This week at Burwell Elementary, the mother of man who is credited with saving as many as 18 lives on 9/11 is coming to speak.
Welles Crowther died, while attempting to save people when the second tower collapsed. The 24-year-old is the subject of the ESPN documentary of the “The Man in the Red Bandana”.
A student in Joy Schott’s sixth grade class at Burwell Elementary researched him as part of a project in the fall. Eight months later, his mother is coming to the school to speak and, as Schott explains, teach the kids something about that day and her son.
“None of them were born or, probably, even thought of on 9/11,” she says. “In sixth grade, we always have theme words and this year the theme word was education.”
“We always branch out on those words to talk about tolerance and how we want to treat people,” Schott adds.
Allison Crowther will speak at Burwell Elementary at 8:15 A.M. on Thursday morning. The event is free and open to the public.
