LINCOLN — About 30 youth group homes in Nebraska are being sent letters after the American Civil Liberties Union says it received complaints that some children are being turned away from being gay.
The ACLU says probation officers and legal representatives are among those contacting the organization. The letters were addressed to home directors and CEOs and urge them to provide clear guidelines for front-office staff to treat all children equally and not turn them away based on sexuality nor gender identification.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said it has informed its homes on its policy not to discriminate based on race, national origin nor disability. However, the group did not answer questions about whether its policies extend to sexual orientation.
