GRAND ISLAND — An attempt to correct a mistake made by the Hall County Assessor has backfired.
Property values were inflated for some new Grand Island businesses and the assessor did not notice the mistake until tax bills were sent out in December.
Jan Pelland attempted to correct the error by having her staff in the assessor’s office prepare the schedules for the businesses, supply inflated values and send them to the businesses with the directions to correct the values and send them back.
Pelland took responsibility for the mistake and the supervisors voted to reduce those inflated personal property values by nearly $5.3 million.
