Last week, an Omaha resident gave her public testimony against the Keystone XL Pipeline. Kara Eastman is the President and CEO of Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance, the Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors of Metropolitan Community College, and the only life-long Democratic Congressional Candidate running in the Nebraska Second House District.
For the past 11 years, Eastman has been helping to remediate the effects of lead poisoning, among other environmental hazards.
Omaha has had a reputation of devastating challenges with lead poisoning from an old lead refinery, lead-based paint from older homes and many other contaminating aspects.
With many homes built before the year 1978, many of those homes still have lead-based paint on the walls. With old paint chipping and being exposed to children, it can be very hazardous. As well as the contaminated soil, it has affected thousands of Omaha residents from just one corporate company.
With Eastmans experience with cleaning up after the damages the lead refinery left, she knows what big businesses can do to a community in the long run, even if the benefits look good.
I know what big industries can do to a community and I just dont think the Keystone XL Pipeline is the right thing for Nebraska, said Eastman.
