On Tuesday, Dec. 19, Jocelyn M. Nordin was sentenced to 60 to 70 years at the Nebraska State Penitentiary pleading no contest to Child Abuse Resulting in the Death of her five week old infant Elayna Nordin, born on April 4, 2016. Authorities became aware of the abuse when an ambulance responded to an emergency on May 2, 2016 when Eleyna was injured by Nordin who dropped her on her head and shook her because she wouldnt stop crying.
Elayna had suffered a fractured skull, brain bleeding and ruptured retinas. The doctor said the injuries were consistent with child abuse.
Nordin admitted to shaking the baby and twice accidentally dropping Elayna on her head,which she told Valley County Sheriff Casey Hurlburt who investigated the case. Nordin said she was frustrated with the child because she was crying and said she handled her roughly.
The next day, a warrant was issued for Nordins arrest on a charge of child abuse causing serious injury. Elayna soon died after succumbing to her injuries.
Nordin was booked into the Douglas County Jail on May 5 and was then transported to the Custer County jail where she served 590 days, which were accredited to her sentencing on Tuesday of 60 to 70 years in the state penitentiary.
