Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Sasse released the following statement after the Senate passed a tax reform package, including the repeal of Obamacares individual mandate.
“Repealing Obamacare’s individual mandate is a very big deal – for Constitutional even more than for policy reasons. Here’s what that mandate did: It made it illegal for American families not to buy a particular product, defined by Washington bureaucrats. Never before has there been such a federal law. It was crazy and wrong. And in practice, it meant that families were presented with a terrible decision: either pay a federal fine or pay an unaffordable price for one of the crummy choices still available on the exchanges. Not anymore. Republicans still need to keep our repeal and replace promise, but tonight the Senate took an important step to save families from Obamacares worst provision.”
