Tuesdays high temperature was 6 degrees in Grand Island, which tied the record cold high temperature for Dec. 26. The previous record was 6 degrees, set in 1996.
The low temperature on Tuesday was minus 17 degrees. The previous record was minus 9 degrees set in 1962 for Dec. 26.
Hastingss record cold high temperature was broken on Tuesday with 5 degrees. The previous Dec. 26 record was 7 degrees set in 1996. Tuesdays low temperature in Hastings was minus 14 degrees, which set a new record low temperature for that day. The previous record was minus 7 set in 1983.
Mike Moritz, warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Hastings, said Wednesdays temps were already breaking records in the morning.
After midnight into Wednesday morning, Grand Island hit minus 14 degrees, which Moritz said is a new record low for Dec. 27. It breaks the previous record low of minus 8 in 1904.
