Amy Hughes, Keep Loup Basin Beautiful (klbb) Project Coordinator is excited to announce the continued support of the Crayola ColorCycle Marker Recycling Program and the Crayon Recycling Programs. Both programs entail the collection of markers and crayons that are no longer wanted or needed and whose end story would be sent to the landfill. Instead KLBB gives the unwanted /needed coloring utensils a new purpose either through recycling or through being donated to those in need.
The Crayola ColorCycle Marker Recycling Program, offers a lot of knowledge on makers and what requirements there are to make a marker ready for recycling if sent to a normal plastic recycling facility. It is a very rigorous process that lead the staff with Keep Loup Basin Beautiful to find an alternative option. The Keep Loup Basin Beautiful Crayola ColorCycle Marker Recycling Program partners with Burwell Elementary to ship the markers to Crayola at Easton, Pennsylvania and Crayola sends the markers to a facility where they break the plastic down and transforms it into fuel.
Over the last three years for the e Crayola ColorCycle Marker Recycling Program and two years for the Crayon Recycling Program thousands of markers(20,216 to be exact equaling 644.1lbs and crayons (129 lbs 15 ounces to be exact) have been kelp out of area landfills. These numbers could not have been reached without the amazing involvement of the 40 marker drop-off locations and 19 crayon drop-off locations in the 13 county area that they serve.
KLBB is grateful for all of those who have stepped up to the environmental conservation plate and have gotten involved in programs such as these to make our area cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful.
