Comstock, NE – Just south of Comstock the Middle Loup River nearly took the lives of two kids who were pulled under in its current near the Comstock Dam on Saturday.
Robyn Sawyer and her three children traveled to Comstock from Omaha for a yearly camping and river floating trip. Before getting into the water, Sawyer said they checked the current, and made sure life jackets were given to the kids to wear in the water.
It was because of the increased amounts of rain and extremely heavy currents that pulled 10-year-old Brooke Sawyer under. 15-year-old Evan Sawyer managed to get a tupe to pull her out, but he was pulled under as well.
It wasnt until kayakers Caleb Stefka, of Broken Bow, and Cody Scott saw the struggling children and rushed to help. Stefka pulled the girl to safety. Bystander Derek Brock got a tube to the young man and pulled everyone from the water just as Comstock Fire and Rescue made it to the scene.
According to the family and Radio Station KCNI, both Brooke and Evan are doing well.
