McCook senior thrower Tiara Schmidt had another strong weekend as the Nebraska-Kearney track and field team won five events at the Bearcat Invitational in Maryville.
The non-team scoring meet began Friday night and featured MIAA and other area Division II schools.
Schmidt, now ranked third nationally in the weight throw and 12th in the shot put, was a double winner as she tossed the shot 46-7.25 and recorded a 62-9.25 effort in the weight throw. Her heave in the weight throw was a new meet and field house record.
Hastings junior Seth Simonson is now ninth in Division II in the 800 as he turned in a career-low 1:51.77. The time was good for second place and moves him up four spots to fourth on the UNK all-time top 10 list. On Friday night Simonson ran lead for the distance medley relay team that finished as runner up. Their time of 9:57.39 puts them fifth on the national list and into third place in the UNK annuals. Also on that foursome was Fremont redshirt freshman Wes Ferguson, Wallace sophomore Micah Swedberg and McCool Junction junior Luke Stuckey. Swedburg went on to win the 600-yard run Saturday (1:12.16) with Ogallala senior Max Lindgren close behind in third (1:12.99).
Finally on the men’s side, Kearney sophomore Brayden Sorensen was second in the high jump (6-8.25), Ravenna freshman Jack Drahota was runner up in the 60 hurdles (8:51), Holdrege senior Blake Schroeder was fourth in the weight throw (57-7.75), and Fremont junior Jake Weston was one of three Lopers in the top nine at 3,000-meters (4th/8:45.62).
The women’s DMR team also had a record book performance as they finished third in a time of 12:22.53. That is the seventh best effort in school history with the team consisting of Ulysses junior Sinclare Fiala, Gothenburg sophomore Hannah Anderson, Kearney freshman Nicole Messbarger, and Imperial senior Destiny Reinke.
Abie junior Rebekah Roh joined Schmidt in the winner’s circle as she took the 600-yard run in 1:26.51. UNK’s other winner was Grand Island senior Mackenzie Puckett in the triple jump (38-0.75). Finally, Iowa senior Maddie Bach was second in the 5,000 (18:02.10), O’Neill freshman Abby Everitt was runner up in the high jump (5-4.50), and Colorado senior Logan Prater was second to Schmidt in the weight throw (55-1).
UNK heads to Topeka next Saturday for the Ichabod Invite.
