West Texas A&M and No. 19 Lubbock Christian used 30 hits to beat Nebraska-Kearney, 9-4 and 10-2 (5 innings), Saturday in Texas.
The games were part of the Lubbock Collegiate Sports Invitational. UNK (1-3) beat Texas-Permian Basin and lost to Midwestern (Texas) State on Friday.
In the morning against WT (4-0), UNK erased a 3-2 deficit when junior cleanup hitter and first baseman Hailey Schaneman (Grand Junction, Colo.) belted a two-run homer to left in the top of the sixth. However, UNK stranded two and then freshman eight-hole hitter Madison Johnson (4 for 4, two RBI’s) led off the bottom of the inning with a homer to right center.
The Lady Buffs added six more runs, three coming via home from sophomore center fielder Ruby Salzman. WT finished the day with 18 hits with freshman nine-hole hitter Hailey Neira (4 for 4, one run) joining Johnson as UNK’s biggest thorns. Schaneman paced the Lopers by going 2 for 4 with a run and three RBI’s while Lincoln freshman left fielder Carly Dembowski went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Dembowski hit her first collegiate homer against the LCU Chaparrals (5-2). It came in the top of the third inning and made it 2-1 Lopers. However, the Chaps scored four in its half of the third and then erupted for five in the fourth. A 12-hit attack two homers, two triples and a double. Senior right fielder Athena Muniz went 2 for 2 with two runs and four RBI’s from the seventh spot in the lineup.
Lincoln junior shortstop and leadoff hitter Abbie Vodicka went 1 for 3 and scored a run while Omaha junior second baseman Kaylee Schutte was 1 for 1 and drew a walk.
UNK is scheduled to play four games in Oklahoma City/Edmond, Okla., next weekend but cold temperatures may alter that tournament.
