A Kilgore man has been charged in the murder of a woman from Cherry County. Cherry County Court records say Kevin Kilmer, 26, is charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of using a weapon to commit a felony. According to an arrest affidavit, around 8 p.m. MDT Monday, the Cherry County Sheriff’s Office was advised by dispatch that a woman reported Kilmer was in her residence south of Eli. She told law enforcement Kilmer was only in his underwear and had blood on his arms and hands. The woman said Kilmer asked her to use his shower to clean up. He later told her he killed 52-year-old Ruth Wittmuss and left her body along a road. Shortly before 9 p.m., deputies contacted Kilmer at a residence in Kilgore. He denied making statements to the woman about killing Wittmuss. He agreed to let deputies search the home and they located a blood spatter on a kitchen wall. Kilmer later fled on foot. He was located around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday in Kilgore and was lodged in the Cherry County Jail. At 2 p.m., law enforcement located Wittmuss’ body in a rural area near Kilgore. Kilmer’s bond is currently set at $1 million. His next court date is pending.
