An outbreak of a virus at Fonner Park has resulted in the death of two horses and put 100 other in quarantine. The virus, EHV-1, is a strain of equine herpes that targets the horse’s neurological system and causes losses in mobility. As there is no know cure for the virus the most humane solution is to euthanize the two horses at Fonner Park. Humans are not affected by the virus but the can cause it to be transported and infected other horses. The entire stable at Fonner Park has issued a 21-day quarantine and no horse can enter or leave the stable till it is over. An official from Fonner Park said that the outbreak was caught early but if it hadn’t they would be in a much different scenario.
