With the difficult travel conditions that accompanied the weather conditions this week NSP was still out and about helping motorists. With some areas experiencing whiteout conditions troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol responded to over 500 weather-related incidents during the winter storm and blistering cold conditions. NSP reported that troopers were able to help 211 motorist statewide on Wednesday and another 306 motorists on Thursday. Most of these calls come from along Interstate 80 and other well traveled highways. One rescue though that involved the NSP occurred in Dawes County close to the South Dakota border. A call was received that two motorist became strand on a county road. The NSP tried to reach the motorist several time with track vehicles and plows but were unsuccessful. The motorists were finally rescued when members of the Oglala Sioux Search and Rescue who were on snowmobiles were finally able to transport them to safety. NSP urges anyone traveling this weekend for the holidays to check Nebraska 511 before leaving and to make sure they have a winter survival kit as well as a full tank of gas and they also want people to know that the Nebraska State Patrol Highway Helpline is available 24 hour a day by calling *55.
