A 74-year-old Nebraska woman, initially believed to be dead, was discovered alive at a funeral home after showing signs of life, authorities announced Monday.
Emergency crews were called to Butherus Maser & Love Funeral Home in Lincoln around 11:45 a.m. after staff began performing CPR on the woman.
According to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ben Houchin, this case is very unusual and unprecedented in his 31 years of service.
The incident took place at the Butherus Maser & Love Funeral Home in Lincoln, Nebraska. The woman, initially pronounced dead at an unspecified nursing home, was transported from hospice care to the funeral home.
A funeral home employee noticed the woman was breathing after placing her on a table and immediately called 911. Police, fire, and medical personnel responded to the scene.
She was subsequently taken to a hospital and was alive as of Monday afternoon. An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident.
Authorities have not found any criminal intent by the nursing home and are uncertain if any laws were broken.
